Last of the Kemalists Swept Away
Turkey's journey from Atatürk's secularism to AKP/Erdogan-backed radical Islam is nearing completion. In the past, when Islam grew too powerful, the Kemalists could retake power with a coup d'etat, but this is no longer possible. The Kemalist military/media power is almost completely gone and Islam has all but taken control. This is why you see Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan so openly attacking Israel. The Kemalists wanted Europe and they were rejected. Erdogan wants an Islamic resurgence and alliances with Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, and Hamas--and he appears to be getting it.
