Major Fighting Erupts In South Sudan: 150 Soldiers And Civilians Killed

The fifth anniversary of South Sudan's independence was marred by violence that left nearly 150 soldiers and civilians dead, the spokesman for the country's vice president said over the weekend.

Nearly 150 people were killed after heavy gunfire broke out Friday between soldiers loyal to President Salva Kiir and others backing Vice President Riek Machar, according to Machar's spokesman, James Gatdet Dak.

NBC reports that the country is on the brink of civil war.
