It seems in our 20th century quest to rule the planet, we dumped so many toxins in our farm lands to improve production / profitability that we didn't consider that all of these chemicals would run off somewhere.
Greed again.
Now water is evaporating and all these nasty little toxins are becoming particulate and blowing in the wind.
Why is cancer ravaging the planet? We ain't seen nothin' yet.
